What is Herbal Tea?
Herbal tea is the term most commonly used to describe any infusion which is not a "true" tea. True teas are the black, green, white, pu-erh, and oolong varieties which are produced from the leaves of the tea plant, camellia sinensis.
Word nerds, this one’s for you. Wondering what the difference between Herbal Tea and Tisane is? Wonder no more - there is no difference! Herbal Tea and Tisane are interchangeable terms for the same style of tea, which includes an incredibly broad number of flavours and ingredients.
Tisane is a French word meaning “herbal tea” in modern language, but was defined in Old French as ‘a medicinal drink or infusion, originally one made with barley.’
Some will say the term tisane is more correct than herbal tea - or even that referring to herbal infusions as ‘tea’ at all is misleading. But, most dictionaries will tell you that the word tea includes other plants besides the tea plant. Personally, we use the word tea pretty loosely - Rooibos Tea, Herbal Tea…we’re not too particular.
Regardless of how you feel about it, the term herbal tea is very well established, and much more commonly used in English than tisane.
Origin Story of Herbal Tea
Documentation of herbal tea goes back as far as 5000 years - to ancient Egypt and China - where texts have described the medicinal benefits of drinking herbal brews. Researchers have even found dried peppermint leaves in multiple Egyptian pyramids, dating back to 1000 BC! According to these historical findings, herbal teas were used as medicine, but also to promote calm, spiritual awareness, and to help with digestion.
We’ve also explored how Rooibos has more recently been discovered in South Africa as an alternative to relatively expensive imported teas from Asia.
Using dried herbs, spices, flower petals, fruit, veggies, and barks for wellness continues widely today. While many people turn to herbal teas to support a healthy body and mind, many people drink herbal teas just because they're naturally caffeine free, delicious and comforting.
Preparation of Herbal Tea
Steeping up a batch of Herbal Tea is easy-peasy! Simply boil water and pour over herbal tea at a ratio of 1 cup water : 1 heaping tsp of tea. Give it a long 5+ minute steep to extract the flavours and nutrients.
The basic steps for producing white tea are:
1. Boil fresh water, and pour over herbal tea

2. Give it a long, 5+ minute steep to extract the flavours and nutrients.
3. Strain and enjoy!
What about Caffeine?
Nope. Nada. None! Herbal teas are almost always naturally caffeine free!
